All for distribution in our weekly food hampers. Feel free to stop by to check out what we have been up to this summer. If you would like to volunteer in the garden c'mon down on Thursday afternoons from 3-5pm!! If you have any other questions, please contact us at email@example.com or by phone at (250) 344-2113.
On August 10th, the Golden Food Bank Garden participated in the 2nd Annual Edible Garden Tour hosted by Wildsight and what day it was! Thank you Wildsight and Joyce deBoer for the opportunity to showcase our hard work! What a great way to get the Community thinking about producing their own food and work towards food security. We look forward to many more Edible Garden Tours to come!!
Is your garden producing more vegetables than you and your family can eat?? Do you have more veggies than you know what to do with?? If so, please remember our Plant a Row Grow a Row Program! Each week, the Golden Food Bank purchases fresh produce in order to increase the nutritional content of our food hampers. During the summer months is a great opportunity for us to reduce this cost through donations of locally grown produce.
Produce can be dropped off Tuesdays-Thursdays from 8-4pm! Please keep in mind our hamper distribution days are Wednesday mornings from 9:30am-12:30pm. Some produce will keep longer than others.
Over the summer months the Golden Food Bank has been working on developing and implementing a Food Recovery Pilot Project. We have been speaking with other food banks across the province who run similar projects collecting food from grocery stores, markets, restaurants and stores. This food has been deemed 'unsaleable' for a number of reasons such as best before dates, torn packaging or even bruised produce. Even though this food is still fit for consumption, the average consumer does not want to purchase it and in most cases it will end up in the landfill. Our goal with this project is to increase the nutritional value of our hampers, reduce food waste, raise awareness surrounding food security in our community and also reduce our food costs here at the Food Bank. If you are interested in learning more or volunteering with us with this exciting new project please contact us by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at (250) 344-2113.
In a joint effort, the Golden Food Bank, Wildsight and Wild Safe BC have teamed up to bring the Community of Golden the First Golden Apple Festival taking place on October 3 & 4th. We are hoping to encourage people to use the apples we have in our community to reduce human and wildlife conflict, raise awareness surrounding food security and have a great time! Leading up to the festival, volunteers will be circulating town to pick apple trees. If you have an apple tree you'd like to have picked or if you'd like to help out please contact Sarah Osadetz, Wild Safe BC
