In 2014, with funding through the Social Grants Program offered by the Columbia Basin Trust, the Golden Food Bank implemented a Food Recovery Pilot Project with the intentions of developing and implementing a full time program. Between January and May 2020 the Food Bank recovered an estimated $25,310 (approximately 4,440 Kg) worth of food and redistributed these highly nutritious foods to about 87 individuals monthly.
We are currently working with local food providers, picking up and redistributing food items such as fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meat and deli items and non-perishables. These items have all been deemed 'unsalable' by the local stores or restaurants for a number of reasons. These items may be too close to their best before dates, have torn packaging or are undesirable to the average consumer. All food being redistributed is perfectly fit for consumption and yet not fit for sale.
