In May of 2015 the Golden Food Bank began a pilot project with Nicholson Elementary School to determine the feasibility of the Food Bank providing the food required to operate the School Breakfast Program (Learning Club). When the school year wrapped up, it was determined that the Golden Food Bank would begin purchasing and supplying food for Nicholson, Alexander Park and Lady Grey Elementary School's Breakfast Programs beginning in the 2015/16 school year.
Every week, the Food Bank fills an order from each school and each of the schools administer the programs. We provide the students with a variety of fruits and vegetables, milk, yogurt, cheese, bread and no-nut butter! The Breakfast Programs in our community are open to every child attending the school, not only children considered low income. This helps to reduce the stigma which sometimes accompanies accessing a meal program and ensures no children are singled out or discriminated against.
When a child eats a healthy breakfast it helps improve mental performance and concentration. Children who skip breakfast will be more sluggish, less attentive and have less energy to carry out tasks. Teachers have observed that children who come to school hungry experience more learning difficulties compared to well-nourished children. Studies show that breakfast eaters perform much better in their school work and show extra energy in sports and physical activities. Besides assuring optimal development and growth, positive effects on alertness, attention, performance on tests and other skills important for academic success are enhanced for those who eat breakfast on a daily basis.
For the Golden Food Bank, being involved in the School Breakfast Programs is one more way we can fight hunger in our community. It is a way for our organization to ensure that every child in our community has access to healthy breakfast at the beginning of each school day. This in turn, helps to keep our community and it's members, strong and vibrant.
We are thankful to the schools for partnering with us and for providing this very important program!
